Role Prompting: Perspective without False Expertise
Use a role to describe the help you want—an editor’s perspective, a tutor’s explanation or a reviewer’s questions. Pair it with real facts and a clear output, then compare the result.
What is role prompting?
Role prompting asks a model to respond from a perspective, such as a plain-language editor or patient tutor. Use it to communicate the kind of help and presentation you want. It does not give the model credentials, access to private knowledge or a guarantee of accuracy.

These practice prompts use the same task, facts and constraints. The second adds a plain-language editor perspective. Try both and judge their actual answers against the same requirements.

Keep the model, settings and source facts comparable. Check the two sentences, supplied facts, neutral wording and missing details. Prefer the answer that fits your task; one comparison does not establish a general accuracy advantage.

What the research supports
A study of 162 personas, four model families and 2,410 factual questions found no overall accuracy improvement from adding personas compared with no persona. Effects varied by setting. This is a reason to test your task, not a claim that roles never help presentation or that the study covers every current model.
Describe the behavior you actually need
Instead of adding grander credentials, request the work: flag unsupported statements, explain terminology for a beginner, preserve supplied facts or suggest two alternative openings. More role detail is not automatically a better prompt.

What should I include besides a role?
State the task, audience, permitted facts or sources, required format and checks. A role alone leaves those requirements unspecified.
How can I compare role prompts fairly?
Keep task, facts, constraints, model/settings and evaluation criteria comparable, changing only the role. Preserve both outputs and their failures.
