Horace Rawlins

Who is Horace Rawlins

Horace Rawlins was an English professional golfer who is best known for winning the first U.S. Open Championship in 1895. Born in 1874 in England, Rawlins moved to the United States where he took up a position as a golf professional. The inaugural U.S. Open was held at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, and it was a 36-hole competition played in a single day. Rawlins managed to win with scores of 91 and 82, beating a small field of primarily professional golfers. His victory earned him $150 and a gold medal. Although Rawlins didn’t achieve enduring fame in golf, his win marked the beginning of what would become one of golf's major championships.
