Serge Reding was a prominent Belgian weightlifter who competed internationally in the 1960s and early 1970s. Born on December 23, 1941, in Auderghem, Belgium, he became one of Belgium's most successful weightlifters. Reding specialized in the superheavyweight category and was renowned for his impressive strength. He was particularly competitive in the snatch and clean and jerk disciplines. His career highlights include winning a silver medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where he was second only to the legendary Soviet weightlifter Vasily Alekseyev. Throughout his career, Reding set multiple world records and frequently competed at the highest levels, including the World Weightlifting Championships and European Weightlifting Championships. His rivalry with Alekseyev was one of the notable features of weightlifting competitions during his era. Tragically, Serge Reding's career and life were cut short when he died suddenly from a heart attack on June 28, 1975, at the age of 33 while in Tehran, Iran, preparing for a competition.
